Prof Sir Brian Heap
Professor Sir Brian Heap is Former Master of St Edmund’s College at the University of Cambridge, Special Professor at the University of Nottingham, and UK Representative on the NATO Science Committee. He was formerly Foreign Secretary and Vice-President of the Royal Society, Director of the Institute of Animal Physiology and Genetics Research (Cambridge and Edinburgh), Director of Research at the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, President of the Institute of Biology, Visiting Professor at the University of Nairobi, Kenya and a member of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics. Sir Brian holds doctorates from Cambridge and Nottingham, and has published extensively in endocrine physiology and biochemistry, biotechnology, food security, sustainable consumption and science advice. He was a member of the expert group on Cloning for the Department of Health, worked on developing country issues particularly in China with the World Health Organisation, Geneva, and on science advice in the UK, the European Science Foundation in Strasbourg, and the European Commission in Brussels. He was a scientific consultant for pharmaceutical companies in the USA, Merck, Sharp and Dohme, New Jersey, Johnson and Johnson, New Brunswick, and Ligand Pharmaceuticals, San Diego, California.
