Dr Donald Bruce
Dr Donald Bruce has PhD’s in chemistry and in theology and is a leading ethicist in the fields of plant and animal genetic modification, animal and human cloning, stem cells, risk and patenting. He spent 15 years in chemistry research and risk assessment in nuclear energy before becoming Director of the Society, Religion and Technology Project (SRT) of the Church of Scotland in 1992. SRT was established in 1970 to address ethical and social issues arising out of modern technology. Since 1993 he has chaired an inter-disciplinary expert group on ethical issues in GM crops and animals, which produced the acclaimed book Engineering Genesis. Since 1996 he has been engaging with researchers on ethical issues of cloning and stem cells. He is a member of the Scottish Science Advisory Committee, and the public issues advisory group of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. He is an observer to the UNESCO International Bioethics Committee. He is a frequent writer and broadcaster on bioethics issues and has written major reports for the Church of Scotland and the Conference of European Churches.
