The NanoOffice is part of the Center for Interdisciplinary Technology Studies (ZIT) at Darmstadt Technical University. It serves as a platform for interdisciplinary discussions, the development of joint initiatives and the pursuit of various research and outreach projects. Any well-grounded engagement with ethical and societal dimensions of nanotechnology requires an understanding of the difficulties and peculiarities of nanoscale research.

The mission of CRN is to: raise awareness of the benefits, the dangers, and the possibilities for responsible use of advanced nanotechnology; expedite a thorough examination of the environmental, humanitarian, economic, military, political, social, medical, and ethical implications of molecular manufacturing; and assist in the creation and implementation of wise, comprehensive, and balanced plans for responsible worldwide use of this transformative technology.

The IRGC project on nanotechnology addresses the need for adequate risk governance approaches at the national and international levels in the development of nanotechnology and nanoscale products. Using the risk governance framework developed in the project 'Basic Concepts of Risk Characterisation and Risk Governance', the project team have developed a generic global framework for the risk governance of nanotechnology. The primary aim of the project is to create forum which enable a wide range of stakeholders to collaborate, using and adapting the risk governance approach established by IRGC, both to determine deficits in the risk governance of nanotechnology, and to establish recommendations for the management of these deficits.

The website is intended to assist project coordinators and team leaders to generate an effective flow of information and publicity about the objectives and results of their work, the contributions made to European knowledge and scientific excellence, the value of collaboration on a Europe-wide scale, and the benefits to EU citizens in general. The content particularly addresses communications via the ‘mass media’ (TV, radio and the written press). It also covers websites and other internally generated support such as print publications, CDs and video.
