Daan Schuurbiers has an MA in philosophy from the University of Amsterdam. At present, he is both project manager for Nanobio-RAISE and carries out the project "Empowering Scientists in their Social Responsibility" at the Delft University of Technology Working Group on Biotechnology and Society.

He is Chairman of the Working Group on Societal Aspects of the Netherlands Biotechnological Society and Vice-Chairman of the Foundation Imagine Life Sciences responsible for the Imagine school competition involving high-school students, scientists and developing countries.

He specialised in science communication through his work for the European Federation of Biotechnology Task Group on Public Perceptions of Biotechnology during the last three years, where he was involved in several EC projects, organised numerous workshops and events and produced various publications and websites.
